Will Brodie joins the Dockers in deal set to unlock the trade period

2021-10-07T09:21+11:00

GOLD COAST is poised to blow the roof off the trade period in a deal agreed with Fremantle that has widespread ramifications.

The two clubs have settled on a deal that sees the Suns send Will Brodie, pick 19 and some picks in the 60s to the Dockers in exchange for future second and future fourth round selections.

Fremantle will then hope to unlock the Jordan Clark stalemate with Geelong with pick 19 as the centrepiece.

That trade would also smooth Adam Cerra’s path to Carlton for pick 6 and an exchange of future selections.

The out-of-favour Brodie was due to be paid more than $400,000 in the final year of his deal next year given the pay deferrals clubs were forced to implement. The Dockers will smooth that money out by lengthening Brodie’s contract.

His departure helps ease the financial squeeze at Gold Coast with a glut of key re-signings needing to be done in the next two years.

The Suns also have the maximum 38 contracted players with free agent Mabior Chol arriving and next to no need for picks in this year’s draft.

Gold Coast is also yet to see last year’s No.7 draft pick Elijah Hollands, while academy picks Alex Davies (one game) and Joel Jeffrey (four) have barely got started.

The Suns exchange with Fremantle is very similar to the failed trade with North Melbourne involving Darcy Macpherson.

Macpherson’s refusal to be traded to the Kangaroos with a year to run on his Suns contract saw that move collapse.

The Suns are also poised to add another year to Macpherson’s back-ended deal that was due to expire at the end of 2022 to further balance the books.
