Sam Mitchell denies actively shopping Hawks players

2021-10-08T18:17+11:00

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has refuted suggestions he’s actively trying to shop Hawks players to other teams in a bid to spark a trade.

The Hawks have publicly said they’re looking to improve their draft hand and numerous reports throughout the week have suggested they are open to trading key players to do that.

Tom Mitchell, Jaeger O’Meara, Chad Wingard and Jack Gunston are the names continually brought up who have the most currency in a trade.

However, it appears the Hawks are yet to find a rival suitor for any of those players.

SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund reported on Friday morning that Mitchell had taken to calling rival clubs himself to spark interest for a potential trade.

However, the new coach told 7 News on Friday afternoon that his actions have been nothing out of the ordinary.

“There have been no conversations with other clubs about those guys that has got to any sort of level that’s worth even talking to the players about it,” he said.

“Someone like Craig McRae, I worked with him all year. We still talk, we’re still friends, we still chat about what it’s like, first few days on the job, first month on the job, nothing specific around players at all.”

The club currently holds picks 5, 21 and 24 in the upcoming AFL National Draft, as they looks to build a new era under Mitchell.
