Alexander names the big signing Redcliffe should target for 2023

2021-10-11T10:55+11:00

Rugby league great Greg Alexander believes Joey Manu should be at the top of Redcliffe’s wish list with the side likely to enter the NRL for the 2023 season.

Manu, 25, has one year to run on his contract with the Roosters, but is free to negotiate with rivals including the new franchise for 2023 onward from November 1 this year.

With the Dolphins certain to target big-name players for their entrance into the competition, Alexander says they need to ensure they’re choosing stars in the right positions.

“First, you have to look at the players available and what positions you need to sure up first,” Alexander said on SEN 1170 Mornings.

“What are your most important positions? Well, the ones that touch the ball the most for mine.

“I think you need a dummy-half, a half – whether it’s a halfback or a five-eighth, you certainly need someone to run the game, and you need a good fullback and front-rower.

“They’re the positions most important to teams.”

With Alexander citing a lack of halfbacks, he believes Manu’s versatility helping him play in multiple critical positions could make him the ideal target.

“Looking through all the names, the halfback will be tough, there’s not an abundance of good halfbacks that can control the game,” Alexander explained.

“That has me wondering … that will be the interesting selection.

“Joey Manu comes off contract, he could play in the halves, the centres or fullback, he could play anywhere.

“If I was in charge of Redcliffe he’s a player I’d be targeting.”

With Manu his number one player, Alexander says Storm star Brandon Smith would also be near the top of his list.

“I think I’d go Joey Manu or Brandon Smith (as the top target),” Alexander said.

“Either one of those, if I had to make a choice out of those, there’s some other hookers around, so I’d go Joey Manu.”

The Dolphins are expected to be announced as the NRL’s 17th franchise some time this week.
