“It’s never been live”: Giants football boss shoots down Hill trade hopes

2021-10-13T18:37+11:00

Greater Western Sydney football boss Jason McCartney has declared the Giants are done for the 2021 trade period and will make no more deals.

That leaves small forward Ian ‘Bobby’ Hill in limbo after he requested a trade to Victoria for family reasons.

A proposed deal for contracted Hawk Luke Breust is also off the table.

Hill caught the Giants off-guard with a trade request on Saturday, nominating Essendon as his preferred destination.

Despite the Bombers reportedly upping their offer to a future second-round pick, McCartney said the deal had never been a likely chance.

“It’s never been live, to be honest, Bobby is a required player at the Giants and he’s got a year to run on his contract,” McCartney told Sportsday.

“We’ve got things in place for Bobby and his partner Georgia for when they return … so we’ll work closely with Bobby to make sure he’s got the support around him in Sydney.

“Obviously, there is a family connection in Melbourne with Brad his cousin.

“Both Bobby and Georgia are from Perth, it’s (a request) where we’ve been clear all the way through (that he would not go), he played 17 games this year.

The Giants only had five days to negotiate a trade with the Bombers after receiving Hill’s request, citing that as a reason why the deal couldn’t go through.

“We don’t have a lot of small forwards and Toby Greene isn’t playing for the first five games, so that’s where it stands,” McCartney said.

“If I use Jeremy Finlayson (and his trade to Port Adelaide) as an example, that was three months in the making.

“We’ve got a job to do running a footy club and winning games, we can’t go backwards.”

McCartney also conceded Rory Lobb returning to the Giants was always a “longshot” due to the financial constraints of the deal, but did confirm the club explored the possibility of recruiting Luke Breust.

“I don’t think that (trade for Luke Breust) will be happening. The Hawthorn strategy has been very clear about trying to improve a draft position,” he said.

“When it comes your way, these opportunities, you definitely want to explore them. But we’re mindful of the fact our money is invested in our playing group.

“You get close on a couple but nothing’s eventuated there, but we’re quite comfortable with our draft hand.”

The trade period closes on Wednesday night at 7:30pm.
