New role would suit Blue “down to the ground”

2021-10-19T10:34+11:00

Would a shift to defence get the best out of Carlton’s Mitch McGovern?

The Blues forward has struggled for form and fitness since arriving at Ikon Park on a lucrative long-term contract at the end of 2018.

McGovern played just five games in 2021 after missing a chunk of the year with back and hamstring injuries.

North Melbourne champion David King wouldn’t be suprised to see the 27-year-old given a different role under new Carlton coach Michael Voss.

“It’s about time he delivers on the big contract that he was offered,” King told SEN Drive.

“It’s not his fault that Carlton were prepared to pay that money, but once you sign it, you’ve got to deliver with professionalism.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they find a new role for him. An intercept marker across half-back would suit him down to the ground. I know they’ve got a few of those sorts of players.

“I reckon ‘Vossy’ (Voss) will get the best out of this guy. He’ll challenge him, there’s no doubt about that.”

Contracted for two more years, McGovern has played 33 games across three seasons at Carlton, kicking 37 goals.
