Kevin Sheehan names his top three general defenders in the 2021 draft

2021-10-21T15:38+11:00

AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan has named his top three medium defenders available in the upcoming national draft.

The draft will be held over two days on November 24 and 25, with the preseason and rookie drafts to be held a day later.

Speaking to SEN's Dwaynes World, Sheehan sees multiple first-round picks in this category and believes the three potential draftees below “are all future stars”.

Lewis Rayson

Glenelg, SANFL / Ex. Sacred Heart College
State: South Australia
Height: 183cm
Weight: 69kg
Date of Birth: 14/01/03

Sheehan says: “He’s the one you like with the ball in his hands because of that ability to spot up the kicks or to break the lines and penetrate with his kicks.

“In the first of the games between South Australia and Western Australia at under 19 level this year … he had 25 possessions and in a beaten side and was one of their best players, and then pushed through to play some great finals footy with Glenelg at under 18 level.”

Josh Sinn

Sandringham Dragons, NAB League / Old Xavierians
State: Victoria Metro
Height: 186cm
Weight: 78kg
Date of Birth: 07/01/03

Sheehan says: “A Sandringham Dragons boy from Melbourne, he’s a little bit taller at about the 186cm mark but rangy still, I reckon there’s a bit of growth still in him in terms of his height.”

“A superstar at under 16 level a couple of years back, and we have to rely on some of that form because Josh played just five matches this year, but the glimpses of him were very, very good, and he’s certain to be a first-rounder in my view.”

Josh Fahey

GWS Giants Academy, NAB League / Queanbeyan FC
State: New South Wales / ACT
Height: 186cm
Weight: 76kg
Date of Birth: 11/11/03

Sheehan says: “He grabbed his chance when the best of the Australian under 18 boys came together for one weekend and were in a camp and played Geelong’s VFL side.

“He was best on ground in that game, playing down in defence.

“He’s a Giants' academy boy, so he’ll be the subject of a bid at some stage.

“I did hear Jason McCartney (Giants footy boss) say at one point they would be trying to keep a spot on their list for young Josh Fahey.

“They’re three left footers to look out for that I think are all future AFL stars with what we’ve seen from them in the last couple of years.”
