The two clubs showing most interest in Glenelg young gun Stagg

2021-10-27T10:49+11:00

South Australian draft prospect Hugh Stagg says there are two AFL clubs in particular who have shown more interest in him than others.

The Glenelg young gun had a superb 2021 in winning the McCallum Tomkins Medal as the best player in the SANFL Under-18s, after leading the Bays to the Grand Final.

He also played for the SA state team in Under-19 games throughout the season, catching the eye of both Brisbane and the Western Bulldogs.

“Mainly I’ve spoken to two (clubs),” he said on SEN SA Breakfast.

“I attracted a bit of interest in the middle of the year. Through the state games I was hoping to catch a bit more interest.

“Brisbane and the Bulldogs are probably the most interested.

“They keep a bit of a closed book on it, so I don’t really get too much (from them).”

As for interest from Port Adelaide and the Crows?

“You’ll have to tell them to give me a call!”

Stagg is a St Kilda supporter and a big Lenny Hayes fan, but models his game on two of the league's pre-eminent mid-forwards.

“I played as a midfielder this year (in the U18s), but I’m probably more of a small forward in terms of (playing) the level up,” he added.

“I think I’m pretty powerful and I’ve got pretty good speed as well. Probably those two things are the main ones (attributes).

“The Toby Greene and Jordan De Goey type players I try to model my game on.

“Obviously a long way away.”

The Tigers U18 captain was asked to pick out the most outstanding draft prospect he played with in 2021.

He opted for Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, the nephew of Essendon and Port Adelaide great Gavin Wanganeen.

“I was fortunate enough to play a month of footy with him and he’s a superstar,” Stagg said.

“His skills are elite and he’s also got that body that can pack on a heap of muscle. He’s got a bit of a slight frame, but this year it didn’t really matter.

“He improved his contest and used his speed on the wing and it proved quite successful for him.”

Stagg says he will head back to Glenelg if by chance he does not get picked up by an AFL club on November 24 or 25.
