Why Carlton-supporting draft hopeful would be happy at Essendon

2021-10-26T12:28+11:00

He does support Carlton and he would love to play for the Blues, but Josh Sinn does not have his heart set on Ikon Park.

The Sandringham Dragons talent is rated as a top prospect by many draft experts and is expected to be selected in the first round of next month’s National Draft.

Sinn may have only played five games of footy in the past 30 months due to injuries and COVID-impacted seasons, but that has not dampened his spirits.

Having grown up as a Bluebagger, he would love to don the navy blue, but as a half-back flanker by trade is well aware that opportunity may not be possible.

“Obviously I’d love to end up at Carlton, but with the position that I play and Carlton having brought in players like Adam Saad and Zac Williams, it doesn’t really all match up,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“I just want to get picked up, it doesn’t matter where I end up, what state, what club. I just really want to make it into the AFL and make a name for myself.”

So where would he like to play? Which club would benefit from his skillset?

There is one Victorian club at the forefront - an arch rival of the Blues - but he is taking all that is ahead of him with an open mind.

“I haven’t really thought about which other clubs,” he added.

“I’d love to be with one of my really close mates Nik Cox at Essendon. That would be pretty nice.

“Also the opportunity to get drafted interstate is something that I would really embrace and really look forward to. Because I don’t think too many kids my age have got the opportunity to move interstate and play their dream job.

“So that’s something I’d look forward to as well.”

The Vic Metro youngster outlined where he sees himself having an impact at whichever AFL club opts to call out his name in late November.

“I like to break the lines off half-back or even through the midfield and really use my kick to open up the game and change angles,” he added.

“I think also my leadership as well, so being able to get the best out of everyone in the team is something I like to do on game day.”

Most kids in his position know from a long way out that a career in the AFL beckons.

At what age did the dream become a reality for Sinn?

“It all really started as a little kid, but I guess it didn’t really come to fruition until under-16s in 2019 when I started to put some really solid football together,” he said.

“I just kind of thought maybe I could make a career out of this.

“Ever since then I’ve just really focused and put a lot of energy intro training really hard.”

Sinn, who rates his last game for Xavier College against St Kevins as his favourite football memory to date, is being tipped to go inside the top 20 in the 2021 AFL Draft.
