Postecoglou’s Celtic close in on Rangers after fifth straight win

Celtic has closed the gap on Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premier League after defeating Hibernian 3-1 on Thursday morning (AEDT).

Goals from Anthony Ralston, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Kyogo Furuhashi inside 30 minutes saw Ange Postecoglou’s side extend their winning running run to five games in all competitions at Easter Road.

Socceroos attacker Martin Boyle netted for Hibernian in the 37th minute, his seventh league goal of the season.

Celtic’s win and Rangers’ 2-2 draw against Aberdeen saw the defending champion’s lead at the top of the table cut to two points after 11 games.

Postecoglou was delighted with his side’s performance, particularly in the first half.

“I thought the first half was probably the best football we’ve played this year,” the former Socceroos coach told reporters post-game.

“We were just really fluent, played through the lines and created good chances.

“We scored three goals and could have had another three, so it's really pleasing to see, especially here against a good side.”

Postecoglou was asked about Celtic’s title chances following Rangers’ suprise slip up at home.

“It just means there's a long way to go, mate,” he said.

“There’s plenty of football to be played and our job is just to keep getting better and keep playing well.

“As I said a few weeks ago, we’ve got to keep our heads down, we've got another game on Saturday it’s a short turnaround.

“Since the international break we've been pretty consistent and settled, which is good, but the pleasing thing is that there are some players who can come in and help us now.”

Celtic has scored 11 goals and conceded just two in their past five matches in all competitions.

The Hoops entertain ninth-placed Livingston on Sunday morning (AEDT).
