Khawaja makes Ashes statement with back-to-back Shield tons

2021-10-28T12:54+11:00

Queensland captain Usman Khawaja has further pressed his case for a place in Australia’s Ashes XI, making his second consecutive century in a Shield clash against Tasmania in Townsville.

Khawaja, 34, hasn’t played Test cricket since 2019, but his form could be too strong to ignore if he continues on his century-making ways.

His score of 119 was only bettered by star teammate Marnus Labuschagne’s 136 as the Bulls made their way to 4-443 at lunch on Day 2.

From four innings’ this year, Khawaja has made 326 runs at an average of 81.50, earning him top place on the Shield’s run-scoring charts at this stage.

While many thought his international career was dead and buried, Khawaja presents as an option for Justin Langer at either the top or in the middle of the Aussie batting order.

Many consider the number five slot and the other opening position – alongside David Warner – as the two spots still up for grabs in Australia’s Ashes XI, two spots Khawaja could theoretically be front of line for.

If he’s considered an opening option, Khawaja would be up against the incumbent Will Pucovski who has been battling concussion issues, and his Victorian partner Marcus Harris.

If the number five spot is instead preferred - as Khawaja batting is at four for Queensland - he’ll be up against the likes of Travis Head, Matthew Wade and Moises Henriques.

The first Ashes Test is set for December 8, with The Gabba hosting the series opener.
