Kyle Chalmers breaks long-standing world record

2021-10-30T13:40+11:00

Australia’s own Kyle Chalmers has shattered the short-course world record in the 100 metres freestyle, bettering a time that has stood for more than 10 years.

France's Amaury Leveaux set the record back in 2008 of 44.94 while wearing a controversial bodysuit which has since been banned.

However, that as now been surpassed by Chalmers' time of 44.84 seconds in the final round of the World Cup in Kazan, Russia overnight.

The race was held in a 25-metre pool which traditionally produces faster times, and he won by 1.48 seconds over Russia’s Vladimir Morozov in second place.

The 23-year-old won a silver medal in the event during this year’s Tokyo Olympics, after taking the gold at Rio five years earlier.

It completes a huge return to form for Chalmers, who underwent surgery on his shoulder late last year.

“If you had of told me 10 months ago that I would break the World Record, I would have laughed,” Chalmers said in an Instagram post.

“At that stage I was in hospital after having shoulder surgery, and just being able to swim again was my main goal.

“It’s been a long journey back! But I would not have it any other way, the challenges, sacrifices and bridges I have had to climb to get to this point make it all that more special.

“I thank you all for being a part of it, I especially thank my team, my sponsors, my family and friends who are with me every single step of the way, this is OUR World Record, not just mine!”
