Who will the Giants select with pick No.2 in the draft?

2021-11-10T17:09+11:00

A pick swap with Collingwood last year landed GWS pick No.2 in the upcoming National Draft.

The Magpies traded their 2021 first-round pick to the Giants in exchange for picks 24 and 30, plus a future fourth-round selection.

It means the Giants hold two top 15 picks – currently two and 13 – in this month’s draft and loom as a big player with night one fast approaching.

GWS board member Jimmy Bartel isn’t sure whether the club will bid on father-son prospects Nick Daicos or Sam Darcy, but did float Vic Country key defender Josh Gibcus as a potential target.

“There are probably two or three guys that you’re thinking of,” Bartel told Sportsday.

“I think everyone knows who the first two are – North Melbourne has absolutely declared Horne-Francis as the No.1 pick and then (Nick) Daicos and then (Sam) Darcy – do we bid on him? Do we bid on Daicos? All the games that go on.

“There’s a handful of guys there that could be pick two.

“(Josh) Gibcus, who we’ve spoken to, the best defender, unbelievable athlete, he’s travelled around as a young guy as we know.

“He’s potentially in that spot as well.”

Gibcus, a Brisbane-born backman who stands at 196cm, is viewed as the best key defender in this year’s draft after impressing for the Greater Western Victoria Rebels.

The teenager lived in Queensland for seven years before moving to Perth and then to Ballarat.

The Giants will take picks 2, 13, 53, 54, 71 and 89 to the draft.
