Blues skipper hoping for December training return following cancer battle

2021-11-19T08:04+11:00

Carlton co-captain Sam Docherty is hoping to return to the club in a training capacity in December.

The All-Australian defender has been battling testicular cancer since last November, undergoing 12 weeks of chemotherapy in the second half of 2021.

New Blues CEO Brian Cook confirmed Docherty is doing well and hoping to get back on the track before the end of the year.

“I had a chat to him last weekend and he just completed his last treatment, I think it was his fifth lot,” Cook told SEN Breakfast.

“He is such a dogged person and he just wants to come back and start training.

“I think he’s hoping and wanting to come back to training in early December.”

Docherty played 14 games in 2021 before his season was ended early by a syndesmosis ankle injury.

The Blues co-captain has had a tough few years, missing all of 2018 and 2019 with ruptured ACLs.
