New AFL football boss wants to see COVID cases at clubs treated like injuries

2021-11-25T13:19+11:00

AFL general manager of football Brad Scott wants to see COVID cases at clubs normalised like any other injuries moving forward.

Several AFL programs have recorded positive tests in recent weeks, while both Essendon and Carlton CEO’s have also tested positive.

Scott, who is now in charge of list management, umpires, rules and MRO at the AFL, said he wanted to see positive tests treated similarly to injuries, as Victoria and New South Wales learns to live with the virus.

“That’s a challenge at the moment we’re working through,” he said on Sportsday.

“Testing has improved given these rapid antigen tests now and fortunately we’ve been able to get some staff (at the draft) because we’ve been able to turn around some tests.

“At least in Victoria we’re out of the seven or 14-day quarantine period and you can get the negative test and get on with it.

“I think we very quickly need to get to a point where we treat these positive cases like normal injuries.

“You might miss and be unlucky to have a positive case and miss a player or coach, but the show must go on.

“That’s the attitude we’re very quickly getting towards.”

The AFL’s competition committee met earlier this week, with Scott confirming the league would look to tighten interpretation on several rules rather than make any changes ahead of next season.
