Former No.1 pick “still in the mix” to receive AFL lifeline

Sydney is still weighing up whether to offer former No.1 draft pick Paddy McCartin a contract for 2022.

Swans coach John Longmire says McCartin is “still in the mix” to receive an AFL lifeline after playing for Sydney in the VFL this year.

The 25-year-old suffered multiple concussions during his time at St Kilda before being delisted at the end of the 2019 season.

McCartin was restricted to 35 games for the Saints after being the top selection in the 2014 National Draft.

“He’s still in the mix (to be picked up by the Swans),” Longmire told Sportsday.

“He’ll do some more training with us this year and we’ll look at him in the pre-season period, mainly to give him another opportunity to be able to show his wares.

“We were able to see him play a little bit of footy this year and we think he’s got the flexibility to play at both ends.

“But we’ll have to wait and see how that goes before that final decision is made.”

McCartin copped a five-week suspension for striking Geelong VFL captain Aaron Black in an off-the-ball incident in May.

The ex-Saint will hope to find his way onto Sydney’s list via the pre-season supplemental selection period.
