Report: Carey set to be given Baggy Green for Brisbane Test

2021-11-30T18:36+11:00

Alex Carey has been chosen to be Australia’s wicketkeeper for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane, according to The Age’s Andrew Wu.

The South Australian was in a battle with Josh Inglis as the two frontrunners to replace Tim Paine, however it’s understood Carey will make his Test debut on one of the biggest stages in Australian cricket.

The 30-year-old had been shaping as Paine’s replacement for the past several years, but an average of just 22 runs from his last eight Sheffield Shield innings left the position up for speculation.

Carey is the incumbent one-day wicketkeeper for Australia and is also vice-captain in that format.

Inglis, 26, has time on his side and could be the country’s next keeper following Carey.

It leaves just the no.5 position as the only spot still contested, with either Usman Khawaja or Travis Head to be given the nod to play in Brisbane.

Jhye Richardson could also replace Mitchell Starc at some point throughout the series, however it appears unlikely it will happen in the first Test.
