“Utter tripe”: Josh Jenkins' biggest myths in footy

2021-12-01T15:45+11:00

Former Adelaide forward Josh Jenkins has named five myths in footy (though some apply to sport in general) that he wants to expose.

Taking the perspective of a recent player, the full forward picked out a number of things that may be overrated from the outside looking in.

His honourable mention: Winners and losers from the AFL draft.

“How would anyone know?” Jenkins told SEN Drive.

“We haven’t seen any of them play let alone how they’ll slot into their AFL side let alone whether they can play AFL footy. So that can go.”

5. The magic spray

“Too many times I see, predominantly soccer players, cricketers too, players go down and get a little bit of spray and suddenly they’re good to go.”

“It’s a myth. It doesn’t work. I liken it to Michael Jordan’s secret stuff in Space Jam.”

4. Early AFL fixture analysis

“The next day, like the draft, ‘who won the fixture?’ It’s complete and utter tripe.”

“’More six-day breaks, start the season with six finalists in a row’, complete and utter nonsense.”

3. Players saying ‘I’m in the best condition I’ve ever been in’

“I’ve been guilty of that, but it’s complete nonsense.”

“Someone would have said it this week.”

2. Clubs and coaches who say ‘I’ve got no awareness of what’s being said in the media’

“They know every single piece of literature that’s out there about their clubs. Everything.”

“If you’re at a press conference and you hear a coach saying, ‘I don’t know what’s being said about that’, just walk out.”

1. Collingwood and Geelong’s clash jumpers

“Utter rubbish. It’s good enough for every other club to wear whites and blues and all these different ones. Collingwood and Geelong: ‘not for us’.”

“I’ve added Geelong because take a look at theirs. They’ve got a tiny bit more blue up on the shoulder and they wear blue shorts versus more white on the shoulder and white shorts.”
