Report: Selectors settle on Australian side for Brisbane Test

2021-12-03T14:32+11:00

Travis Head will get the first crack at Australia’s no. 5 position for the Ashes while Mitchell Starc will also be selected, according to News Corp's Ben Horne.

It means Usman Khawaja and Jhye Richardson will miss out and have to bide their time in hopes of being selected later in the five-Test series.

The report follows the confirmation Alex Carey would replace Tim Paine behind the stumps.

Head and Khawaja were the two clear contenders for the no.5 spot in Australia’s batting lineup and have both performed well in the Sheffield Shield season to date.

Head played the first two Tests of last summer’s four-Test series against India before being dropped for the remaining matches after failing to pass 38 in three innings.

Meanwhile, Starc has been a constant in all formats for Australia in recent years, however a lacklustre Test series against India gave strength to calls to blood Richardson instead.

However, the left-arm paceman averages over four wickets a Test at the Gabba – which will host the first Test – and will also pick himself for the day/night contest in Adelaide with his abilities to swing the pink ball.

The two reported selections mean Australia’s team for the first Test is all but locked in.

EXPECTED TEAM

David Warner, Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood and Nathan Lyon.

The Ashes begins in less than a week in Brisbane on December 8.
