“At risk of fading away”: What does the future hold for De Goey?

What does the future hold for Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey?

The 25-year-old appeared in the New York Criminal Court via video link on Thursday morning (AEDT) to face four charges, including assault with intention to cause injury.

De Goey wil reportedly return to court on January 4 with a final decision to be made on January 18. The out-of-contract Magpie has pleaded not guilty and will “vigorously defend himself” following an alleged incident at a New York bar involving a 37-year-old man in late October.

As a result, Kane Cornes “can’t see” De Goey staying on at Collingwood beyond 2022 after he was stood down by the club amid the ongoing court case.

“What’s changed for them to change that stance that they’ve had?” Cornes told SEN Breakfast.

“They can’t welcome him back until this (court case) has been heard.

“But then when you think about it, the preparations for the season come along pretty quickly with Round 1 in March, it doesn’t give him a lot of time to get ready. Out of contract as well which is fascinating for me.

“I can’t see there’s any way Jordan De Goey is a Collingwood footballer in 2023.”

Collingwood football boss Graham Wright admits De Goey’s behaviour is a “concern” while the player’s manager, Ryan Vague, disagreed with the Magpies’ decision to stand down the midfielder.

Cornes continued: “He can’t return to training until January 18. We’ve just heard the case has been adjourned. No information has changed that Collingwood could welcome him back from then.

“I’m reading between the lines that the De Goey camp isn’t that happy with how Collingwood have handled it, there’s a little bit of animosity already with that and a few gripes with the fact that they have stood him down.

“But then you put yourself in the Collingwood side of things, he should be in the sweet spot of his career, there will be a club that gets sucked in to offering him a long-term contract worth significant money.

“Collingwood can’t afford to match that with the risk that he poses outside of football.

“He’ll play for Collingwood this year (2022) you would think, but beyond next year, I can’t see how he stays, and he probably needs a fresh start.

“I don’t care what anyone says about De Goey, he’s not a disciplined player. He may think he’s disciplined, and he may think he’s posting training videos to Instagram … he’s not a disciplined player.

“If he was and if his career meant that much to him, he wouldn’t have found himself in the situation that he has found himself him.

“He’s at risk of fading away unfortunately and being one of those players that we spoke about a couple of days ago that has enormous talent but doesn’t maximise it.”

De Goey has kicked 155 goals in 118 games for Collingwood.
