Essendon legend James Hird has reportedly moved a step closer to a return to AFL clubland.
According to The Herald Sun, Hird has agreed to share his wisdom and football expertise with GWS this weekend, where he is expected to address the club’s leadership group as well as their emerging leaders.
The report says the Giants are willing to work with Hird in a mentoring or assistant coach role next year, although no formal offer or approach has been made.

Hird spoke to Giants players in their Melbourne hub this year after they relocated from New South Wales due to a COVID-19 outbreak.
The Brownlow Medallist, Norm Smith Medallist and five-time All-Australian resigned as Essendon coach in 2015 and hasn’t held a coaching role in the AFL since.
Hird played 253 games for the Bombers, winning two premierships – including one as captain – five best and fairest awards and was named in Essendon’s Team of the Century.
