Why re-signing with Warriors was a “no-brainer” for Egan

2021-12-20T08:08+11:00

New Zealand Warriors dummy-half Wayde Egan says it was an easy call for him to re-commit to the club.

Egan, 24, was originally signed through until the end of 2022 but recently added an extra two years on top of that to take him through until the end of the 2024 campaign.

With the starting number nine spot having his name on it for the foreseeable future, Egan says he thinks he can help the club progress in the coming season.

“It’s a very proud achievement for myself to lock in another few years at the Warriors,” Egan said on SEN 1170 Call Time with Katie Brown.

“I really love the club, and I think we can go further this year than we did last year obviously.

“But the future of this club is looking very promising, so yeah it was sort of a no-brainer when they approached me.”

Having started his career at Penrith in 2018 before shifting to the Warriors in 2020, it was only last season that he became a permanent starter in first grade.

Now 67 games into his first-grade career, Egan hopes he can continue to progress with young stars surrounding him.

“Last year Browny (Warriors coach Nathan Brown) sort of came to me and said that he wanted me to be the 80 minutes or starting hooker,” Egan explained.

“That sort of progressed my game, and I’ve still got more learning to do but I hope that improves in the next couple of years.

“The coaching staff at the Warriors have been really good, I’ve sort of listened to them and Browny knows his stuff.

“They’ve got a lot of wisdom in the game … hopefully we sort of kick on even further this season.”

Egan will be hoping to help the Warriors to an improved 2022 after they finished 12th in 2021 with just eight wins from 24 games.
