“Everyone will go”: ACA boss expects Australian players to commit to Pakistan tour

2022-01-19T10:30+11:00

Australia wrapped up a comprehensive demolition of England in the Ashes, securing a 4-0 series victory in Hobart.

The focus now turns to the upcoming tour of Pakistan in March where Australia have not visited since 1998.

Whilst there have been concerns raised for the security of the players, Australian Cricketers’ Association CEO Todd Greenberg is confident that all players that are selected will travel to the country.

“I think everyone will go,” Greenberg told SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“It’s a very significant tour with three Test matches.

“Talking to (the) players, they want to test themselves against the very best in the world and they want to play in different conditions.”

The tour will be significant for a few key members of the Australian Test squad.

Marnus Labuschagne, who is currently ranked as the number one Test batter in the world, has yet to play a Test match in Asia.

The tour also gives Usman Khawaja the chance to play in the country of his birth and opens the door for leg-spinner Mitch Swepson to make his long-awaited test debut.

Greenberg also believes that Australia needs to tour Pakistan for the betterment of world cricket.

“As Australians, we’ve got a duty to the broader international game to continue to play cricket (overseas),” Greenberg said.

“We can’t just expect teams to continue to tour Australia and for us not to make that same level of commitment.”

Last year, Pakistan was dealt massive blows when New Zealand abandoned their tour at the 11th hour and England also scrapped their tour over security fears.

Greenberg admitted that turmoil in Pakistan was a large reason why Australia has not toured in 24 years but said that everything will be done to ensure the highest security measures are in place.

“We’re not taking by chance and we’re doing everything possible to protect them … not just to the players but their families,” Greenberg said.

“We’ll take a really strong team and players will embrace that opportunity.”

The first Test is scheduled to take place on March 3 in Karachi.
