AFL great Dermott Brereton can’t see Jordan De Goey remaining a one-club player for his entire career.
De Goey, 25, has played 118 games for Collingwood since making his debut in 2015 and while he’s clearly one of the club’s most damaging players on-field, he’s also had his troubles off it, most recently being charged with harassment in the second degree following an incident in New York last October.
With his latest run in with the law not being his first, Brereton believes there will be a time when the relationship between De Goey and the Magpies becomes too strained to continue forward.
As the midfielder comes off contract at the end of this season, Brereton explained how and why he sees De Goey shifting to another club eventually.
“No, I don’t think he will (be a Collingwood player for life), at some stage I do (see him leaving),” Brereton said on SEN Drive.
“There’ll be something happen, it’ll be of a minor nature, it’ll be a parking fine or something.
“We’ll say, ‘Woah, he keeps getting in trouble’, not to suggest what he’s been through is similar to a parking fine, but it’ll create tension.
“Someone will say, ‘Okay, I’ve had enough of this’, it’ll be Collingwood, he will say, ‘I’ve not felt the support’ … the ball will go back over the net and he’ll end up somewhere else.
“I hope it doesn’t happen, he’s a good Collingwood player … when you think of him he’s a Collingwood player.
“But it does seem he attracts a type of trouble that at some stage you could see the unison breaking.”
De Goey returned to Collingwood training last week after his legal issues were resolved.
