Jenkins “fearful” for Gold Coast if Ben King leaves

2022-01-26T12:44+11:00

Speaking on SEN Breakfast, Josh Jenkins and Kane Cornes discussed the biggest out of contract name potentially on the move in 2022: Ben King.

King has long been linked to a return to Victoria, though the Suns will be hoping to build their team around him for a decade.

The 21-year-old kicked 47 goals in 2021 despite Gold Coast’s struggles and Jenkins is worried about what the future holds for the expansion side if he does depart.

“I pray that he stays. I pray that he stays up there because I’m fearful for the Gold Coast Suns if he leaves,” Jenkins said.

“It’s that big for them. I pray that he stays up there.”

Cornes, however, can’t see it happening, saying: “He’s not staying. I’m giving it zero chance.”

“The really difficult ones to value are the young players that haven’t played a lot of footy or achieved much like a Ben King, but the upside and you’re paying for potential,” Cornes added.

“It’s dangerous, we’ve seen it with Jon Patton and Tom Boyd and other key positions players that haven’t developed.

“But you’d think Ben King is going to be one of the five highest paid players in the game.”

The Suns have not made finals over more than a decade in the league, and have lost a slew of talented players over the years for a multitude of reasons.
