Rogic stars, duo net maiden Socceroos goals in Vietnam thrashing

2022-01-28T07:57+11:00

The Socceroos recorded a much-needed victory over Vietnam in their quest to qualify automatically for the 2022 World Cup.

Goals from Jamie Maclaren, Tom Rogic, Craig Goodwin and Riley McGree inspired Australia to a 4-0 win in front of over 27,000 fans at Melbourne’s AAMI Park on Thursday night.

It was a memorable night for substitutes Goodwin and McGree, who both netted their maiden international goals in the second half, while Rogic pulled the strings in midfield, setting up Maclaren’s opener before getting on the scoresheet just before half-time.

“We knew the significance of the game in terms of qualification and the performance of the team,” Rogic said post-game.

“We maybe got a bit sloppy in the second half but overall, it was a good day’s work.

“I am enjoying my life on and off the pitch. We have got a bit of work to do regarding qualification, but we are on the right track.

“I think we were in control the whole match. I don’t think the scoreline flattered us.”

Coming into the match on a three-game winless run and without coach Graham Arnold on the touchline due to COVID, the Socceroos did what they needed to do to stay in touch with second-placed Japan and group leaders Saudi Arabia.

Former Manchester United assistant René Muelensteen took charge of the team in Arnold’s absence.

“We knew it was going to be a challenge but (I was) pleased with the quality we showed at times. Most importantly (we got) the three points. We knew we needed to keep going,” Muelensteen said.

“We were in constant touch with (Arnold). I know he would have been sat there and enjoyed the performance.”

The Socceroos next play Oman in Muscat in another must-win World Cup qualifier on Wednesday morning (AEDT).

It was a good night for Australian football, with the Matildas beating Thailand 2-1 to make it three wins from three in Group B at the Asian Cup.

Australia will take on South Korea in a quarter-final clash on Sunday night from 7pm (AEDT).
