Kanye West's request for Marvel Stadium concert knocked back in favour of AFL clash

2022-01-28T13:45+11:00

Rapper Kanye West has reportedly been told by the AFL that he must adjust his upcoming Australian tour schedule as it clashes with an opening round AFL fixture.

According to The Age, West, who recently legally changed his name to Ye, requested to play a show in Melbourne on Friday March 18 at Marvel Stadium.

The only problem is that a Round 1 Friday night fixture between St Kilda and Collingwood is scheduled at the venue on the same date.

The Age's Sam McClure broke the news, and he first floated the story as co-host of Sportsday when he mentioned that a musician was set to have trouble with his Australian tour due to AFL scheduling.

“There is a soon to be announced World Tour which may intersect with the start of the footy season,“ McClure said on Sportsday.

“(I'm just wondering who's going to win out here between arguably the biggest global act...of the last 50 years or (AFL) games at Marvel Stadium...it's getting interesting.“

Due to the late notice of the request and the fact that West has not officially announced an Australian Tour, the AFL has reportedly told the musician's management that there wouldn't be enough time to accommodate his application and reorganise a venue for the Saints and Pies game.

The AFL, who owns Marvel Stadium, told concert organisers TEG that they would not move the match despite West’s status in the entertainment industry.

The only likely alternative venue would be the MCG where the Saints have only won 12 times in the past 11 seasons.
