Why Souths sided with Murray as captain ahead of Walker and Cook

2022-01-31T14:06+11:00

South Sydney CEO Blake Solly has revealed why the club appointed Cameron Murray as their captain ahead of the 2022 season.

Murray, 24, was chosen to replace the departing Adam Reynolds ahead of other quality options in Cody Walker, Latrell Mitchell and Damien Cook.

With a plethora of options to pick from to replace Reynolds, Solly says Murray was sided with primarily because of his young age compared to the other options.

“Anyone of those guys could’ve been appointed captain,” Solly said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“They all had really strong cases to all be the captain.

“I think what went in Cameron’s favour I suppose was his relative youth.

“Compared to some of the other candidates he’s still a very young man and he has a long-term contract with the club.”

On top of his long-term viability in the role, Solly says Murray was an obvious choice as he has strong continuous links to the club as well as having the right personality to lead.

“He’s been at the club in some ways since he was a kid, he’s played through the junior system, his father played for the club, his sister has played for the club,” Solly explained.

“On balance, all of those things are really important and given that we’ve had three or four captains in the last five seasons I think Jason (Demetriou) was looking for someone who will be at the club for the next five to 10 years as captain.

“Cameron fits that bill, he has enormous respect from the players, the fans, the coaches, the board, the ownership.

“Everyone that’s come into contact with Cameron knows how much of a quality human being he is.”

Despite his young age, Murray has already played 103 games for the Rabbitohs, seven games for New South Wales and has earned his International debut with the Kangaroos.
