Cameron highlights Hird’s role with the Giants

2022-02-09T07:55+11:00

Leon Cameron has outlined what James Hird’s role with GWS is and what he brings to the club.

The former Essendon star and coach joined the Giants in a part-time leadership advisor role in January and will work closely with the three captains - Stephen Coniglio, Toby Greene and Josh Kelly - and extended leadership group.

Cameron says the Brownlow Medallist, two-time premiership player and five-time All-Australian will also spend time with emerging Giants leaders while lending a hand on the training track.

“He’ll be involved in our leadership program, working closely with our leadership group, our three captains and our next emerging leaders,” Cameron said on Sportsday.

“We think we’ve got a fine young bunch of lads underneath our leadership group and our three captains. He’ll spend the majority of time with them, but once a month he’ll be spending time with those young fellas as well.

“Equally though, he’s also got a footy interest. It’s not just about leadership, but the majority of it is.

“He’s out getting involved in the drills in pre-season when he comes up. He’s been up two or three times in the month of January and he’s due up next week.”

Cameron has described the partnership as a “win-win” for both the Giants and Hird, who was last involved at AFL level with the Bombers in 2015.

“It’s really great, I think it’s fantastic,” he added.

“Clearly it’s a win-win for both. It’s great for us because we have his experience and knowledge of football, both coaching and playing.

“He’s genuinely excited just to get back into footy as well.”

Hird indicated last month that Giants player Matt De Boer was the surprise catalyst for his move to Homebush.

The Giants are preparing for their AAMI Community Series clash with Collingwood on March 6 before their Round 1 meeting with Sydney on March 19.
