“Bloody hopeful”: Dangerfield endorses Geelong’s Pearce pursuit

2022-03-02T11:24+11:00

Geelong star Patrick Dangerfield is excited by the possibility of Daisy Pearce joining the Cats’ coaching staff.

Geelong CEO Steve Hocking confirmed to Sportsday on Tuesday night that talks with Pearce’s management have taken place over an assistant coaching role with the club’s men’s team.

The Age also reported that Pearce turned the opportunity to coach Essendon’s inaugural AFLW team.

Dangerfield says Pearce will make a “terrific” coach when she eventually brings down the curtain on her playing career. The 33-year-old is the captain of Melbourne’s AFLW team in 2022.

“When I saw the report, I was pretty excited,” the Brownlow Medallist told SEN’s Whateley.

“All things considered given their season is still unfolding and it’s probably inappropriate to comment, but I will anyway, because she’s the face of the female game, let’s be frank. She’s been such a figurehead.

“Whether it’s the Geelong footy club that she comes to – and I’m bloody hopeful that it is – I’ve got no doubt that she’ll make a terrific coach when she decides to hang up the boots whenever that may be.”

Dangerfield is confident Pearce could seamlessly step into a men’s coaching role at an AFL club.

“She’d do it easily to be honest. She has so much respect within the industry,” he said.

“We’re a stronger industry because of female involvement and we’ll be stronger again with greater female involvement – whether it’s coaching, high-level administration, CEO.

“And she’s been a huge leader of that.”

Pearce was recently elevated to Channel 7’s Friday night football broadcast team for the 2022 AFL season.
