“New era” for the Dragons with Griffin to pick young trio in Round 1

2022-03-07T08:11+11:00

St George Illawarra will have a new look at the start of the 2022 season, with coach Anthony Griffin set to name three youngsters in the starting XIII.

According to The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio, teenagers Tyrell Sloan and Junior Amone will be named to start alongside young winger Cody Ramsey.

“We know there’s some bubbling excitement about St George Illawarra having an improved season in 2022,” Riccio said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“It’s exciting news guys, I can tell you that Anthony Griffin is going to go with all three young guns.

“This is very much a new era I believe for St George Illawarra, I’m pointing to Junior Amone in the halves, Tyrell Sloan at fullback and Cody Ramsey on the wing.

“All my mail suggests that Anthony Griffin will select all three, that’s exciting for Saints fans.”

With the emerging stars named to start, Riccio is hearing that veteran off-season recruit Moses Mbye will play in a bench utility role to allow Griffin to plug any holes that pop up.

“I’m getting a little bit of mail that Moses Mbye – an off-season recruit – will start the game off the bench in a utility role,” Riccio said.

“He could play fullback if Sloan struggles, could play dummy-half or jump into the halves.

“I think it’s really exciting times, the Dragons have gone through a tough period as far as recruitment is concerned.

“Finally they have these exciting stars – certainly Tyrell Sloan at the back – that’ll be the selection come team list Tuesday.”

The Dragons begin their 2022 season with a Round 1 clash against the Roosters at the SCG on Saturday.
