Maynard's appeal rejected by AFL tribunal

2022-03-08T17:55+11:00

Brayden Maynard’s appeal of his two-game ban has been rejected by the AFL tribunal.

Maynard’s attempt to spoil GWS’ Daniel Lloyd in a pratice match was not looked upon favourably by Match Review Officer Michael Christian on Monday, who classified the Collingwood defender’s actions as careless conduct, high impact and high contact and offered him a two-game suspension.

Lloyd was briefly knocked unconscious by the spoil and was diagnosed with a concussion in the aftermath.

The Pies confirmed on Tuesday that they would take the decision to the tribunal, with the case kicking off at 5pm AEST.

Collingwood’s counsel Stephen Russell argued Maynard’s effort was a “legitimate football action”, given he collected the football in the spoil.

However, AFL counsel Andrew Woods suggested a “reasonable player would not regard Maynard’s actions as prudent”, claiming the 25-year-old breached his duty of care.

Maynard did not provide evidence while the case was before the tribunal.

The jury consisting of Jason Johnson, Wayne Henwood and Jeff Gleeson deliberated for 20 minutes before delivering a verdict before 6pm.

Maynard will miss Collingwood’s opening two games of the 2021 season, where the Pies are scheduled to play St Kilda and Adelaide.
