“Unbelievably required player”: The “interesting” situation surrounding out-of-contract winger

2022-03-15T14:25+11:00

Karl Amon shapes as the next big signature Port Adelaide requires in 2022.

Amon, 26, is coming off his best season to date in 2021 where he averaged career highs in disposals (24), marks (six), inside 50s (five) and tackles (four).

However, the winger is yet to put pen to paper beyond 2022. Given the Power’s shallow depth in the midfield, SEN’s Michaelangelo Rucci believes Amon’s contract situation is “interesting”.

“There’s always going to be those players who you know are either reaching the end of their careers or at crossroads, but the one I find interesting that is still going at Port Adelaide is Karl Amon, out of contract at Port Adelaide this year,” Rucci told SEN SA Breakfast.

Amon grew up in Melbourne and played for the Sandringham Dragons before being drafted to the Power in 2013.

He was on the trade table back in 2018 after a lean run of form, but after no suitors were found he stuck out the last year of his contract and earned another deal.

SEN’s Andrew Hayes couldn’t find any whispers on the status of Amon’s next contract, further complicating the situation.

“Yes (I did make some phone calls in regards to Amon’s contract), and I couldn’t find too much,” he said.

“So, (it’s) ongoing… it is an interesting one because Karl Amon is an unbelievably required player, he’s settled… so that’s going to be the next big signature apart from the veterans, but you’d expect them to be later on in the year.”

The Power secured two of the biggest signatures in the league when youngsters Zak Butters and Connor Rozee re-signed on Saturday, those two hoped to develop into consistent A-graders in 2022.
