Twomey provides contract update on three big-name free agents

2022-03-17T08:18+11:00

AFL Media journalist Callum Twomey has provided contract updates on Jack Macrae, Darcy Moore and Karl Amon.

The trio are all reaching free agency this year and all are at different stages of contract negotiations.

Twomey believes Macrae is on the verge of inking a new deal to remain a Dog.

“The good news for the Bulldogs is (Jack Macrae) is closing in on a new long-term deal,” Twomey told SEN Breakfast.

“He’s a free agent and set to be wiped off the free agency list any moment now, it’s really close.

“It’s expected to be four or five years, which locks him in and makes him a Bulldog for life.

“185 games, he’s barely played a bad one, and he was good again last night and he’s a Bulldog through and through and the vice-captain now.

“They’ve got a long list of free agents and out of contract players, but to get him secured is great for them.”

As for Collingwood defender Moore, Twomey said the Pies have a lengthy deal in front of their star.

“There’s been discussions on Darcy Moore’s contract with Collingwood for a little bit now. The Pies have been keen to lock him away for some time now,” he said.

“They’ve made a move on him now. He’s weighing up a long-term offer that could be as long as five or six years and that’s where free agency has got to now.

“For clubs to be able to prise out a player they need to offer a long-term deal and for teams to keep a player, they need to offer a long-term deal. We saw that with Zach Merrett last year, we saw it with Patrick Cripps, they both did six years.

“Darcy Moore is sitting on that at the moment, expecting him to sign that in the coming weeks. Until it’s signed it’s not done and there will be interest from other clubs, but good signs there and he might be there captain next year.”

Port Adelaide wingman Amon has put off contract talks at this stage, but Twomey doesn’t believe Power fans should be particularly worried.

“I don’t think (there was anything to worry about). He’s just waiting a little bit to hold off and get some games under his belt,” he said.

“Free agency is the point and players can cash in. He was up for grabs a couple of years ago and is a great story to turn it around and be a nearly All-Australian wingman now.

“He’s not amongst that group of Power players that re-signed recently.

“Amon will attract the interest of Melbourne clubs again, St Kilda went pretty hard last time, but at this stage he’s holding off talks, but expect that to be okay from a Port Adelaide perspective.”
