Thomas facing weeks on the sidelines after desperate smother attempt

2022-03-29T10:10+11:00

TARRYN Thomas is likely to be sidelined for a number of weeks after sustaining internal damage during North Melbourne’s win over West Coast.

Despite avoiding broken ribs in his attempt to smother on Sunday, Thomas was kept under observation in hospital for a second consecutive night last night.

The emerging star will see a specialist later today before the Kangaroos can gain more clarity on exactly what they are dealing with.

Thomas is said to have also avoided kidney damage, but instead suffered trauma to another internal organ.

Sources this morning said Thomas and the Kangaroos were facing a rare injury. The midfielder will be released from care today.

Meanwhile, Ben Cunnington is expected to resume running later this week as he makes steady progress in his comeback following the detection of a secondary cancer.

North Melbourne has always considered any Cunnington return to action this year as a bonus after the midfielder underwent a nine-week course chemotherapy in the off-season.

The dual best and fairest winner has taken part in stationary drills and spent time on the indoor bike in recent weeks.
