Why Richmond skipper never doubted his troops following Round 1 defeat

2022-03-29T13:38+11:00

Richmond captain Toby Nankervis has “great confidence” in his group after his first win as the Tigers skipper on Sunday.

In his 100th game of AFL footy, Nankervis celebrated a 36-point win against the Giants.

After a disappointing loss to Carlton in Round 1, the Tigers went into Round 2 against the Giants as underdogs. Richmond also went into the game without star players Dustin Martin, Dion Prestia, Dylan Grimes, Kane Lambert and Jack Riewoldt among others.

But the Tigers brought some of their best form. They were strong around the contest and secured the three-goal win.

“Last week it was an area we really got shown up in (strength around the contest) and that’s an area we really pride ourselves in especially as a midfield group…so it was good to get growth in that area yesterday,” Nankervis told SEN’S Run Home.

The ruckman had 15 disposals, five tackles, 21 hitouts and an excellent reverse torpedo goal in the contest.

A three-time premiership player, Nankervis is very familiar with the Tigers' peak form.

“I have such great confidence in the group we have, although as a team we don’t want to speak about the outcomes or what may be, we just want to speak about the week to week and playing our brand of footy,” he said.

“I think we did that for parts in Round 1 and for a lot longer yesterday, so I think no matter who’s playing we just want to play our brand of footy and we know what that looks like as a group, so each week we build on that, and we know that holds us in good stead."

Richmond will face St Kilda this Sunday afternoon in the very significant ‘Maddie’s match’.
