Rival clubs expected to target Giants midfielder

2022-03-31T08:45+11:00

Clubs will “come very hard” for out-of-contract GWS midfielder Tim Taranto, according to AFL Media reporter Cal Twomey.

The 24-year-old recently told AFL.com.au that he’s in no rush to sign a new deal, but did say he’s happy and settled in Sydney.

Taranto, the No.2 pick in the 2016 National Draft, has become a prolific ball-winner for the Giants and notched his 100th game for the club in last week’s loss to Richmond.

A Giants best and fairest winner in 2019, Taranto is averaging 27.5 disposals, five inside 50s and 3.5 clearances per game so far in 2022.

“The one to watch at the Giants is Tim Taranto, who is out of contract this year,” Twomey told SEN Breakfast.

“That’s where a discussion will be had on where he’s playing and what inside midfielder or midfielder do the Giants have to shed from a salary cap point of view this year.

“Clubs will come very hard for Tim Taranto.

“He’s a Victorian boy of course, he loves Sydney, he’s a heart and soul player up there, just played his 100th game, but there’s no doubt that with potential full-time midfield roles available elsewhere, what offer or opportunity does that present in his mind?

“I think that’ll be an interesting one, depending on what role he plays this year, but that one will be one to follow in the coming months.”

Twomey expects the Giants to keep hold of emerging young midfielder Tom Green.

“He (Green) has got another year to go on his contract,” he said.

“As I said before, contracts don’t always mean anything if club and player are happy to move, but I don’t see them moving him at this point.”
