Matt Lodge questioned after rejecting “significant” Warriors offer

2022-04-01T08:54+11:00

New Zealand Warriors forward Matt Lodge has reportedly rejected a three-year contract offer to stay with the club beyond 2022.

Lodge originally joined the Warriors after switching mid-season from the Broncos in 2021 as a result of multiple off-field issues.

While he was offered a lifeline by the club and has somewhat rebuilt his career with them in the last year, The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio says he’s knocked back an extension in hope of returning to Sydney.

“Matt Lodge, it’s an interesting one as he’s rejected a significant three-year deal with the Warriors,” Riccio said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“It’s because he wants to return to Sydney.

“I really can’t see too many clubs (that’d sign him), when I have a look at who would be interested in Matt Lodge.

“I think it’s a big play from Lodge to reject that offer.

“Obviously, he’s formerly a Wests Tiger and any player of note is linked to them.

“But other than that, I can’t see an opening from Lodge at this point in time and I think it’s a big call from Lodge to reject that offer.”

With Lodge posturing to leave the club, SEN host Greg Alexander pondered whether other Australian based players will follow suit when the Warriors return to New Zealand later this year.

“I wonder how many of the Australian players that aren’t in the Warriors’ line-up at the moment actually make it to New Zealand,” Alexander said.

“Reece Walsh of course has that clause to get out.”

Lodge has been named at starting prop for Saturday’s clash against Brisbane at Moreton Daily Stadium.
