“Would be an absolute honour”: Scottish-born striker keen to represent Socceroos

Scottish international and Socceroos hopeful Jason Cummings says it would be an “absolute honour” to represent Australia.

The 26-year-old striker has become an instant cult hero in the A-League since joining the Central Coast Mariners on an 18-month deal in January, scoring seven goals in 16 appearances.

Cummings is keen to play for the Socceroos after representing Scotland at youth and senior level, but is yet to speak to Australia’s national team coach Graham Arnold.

“I’ve had no contact yet (with Arnold),” Cummings told SEN 1170’s The Global Game.

“My main focus now is obviously with the Mariners and getting that top six (finish).

“But it’s good to see that I’m getting recognition, a lot of people are saying they want to get me in the national team, which would be an absolute honour if I could.

“If I keep doing well, keep scoring goals, I might have a chance of getting in there. I’d love to be.

“I love scoring goals … and I’d obviously work my socks off.”

A Scottish-born Aussie winger is eager to see Cummings in Socceroos colours.

“I’ve spoken to Martin Boyle a few times and he’s wanting to get me in as well,” Cummings said.

“It’s not up to me if I get called up. Hopefully I can one day.”

Cummings and Boyle played together at Scottish club Hibernian.

It remains to be seen whether the in-form Mariners striker will receive a call up for Australia’s World Cup playoff against the United Arab Emirates in June.
