Clarke floats cross-code switch to NRL in bid to achieve “life goal”

2022-04-23T15:34+10:00

Star union winger Caleb Clarke has floated the idea of a code transfer to the NRL.

The switch would be the third of the 23-year-old's career to date, after stints in the All Blacks and All Blacks Sevens sides have already given him much success.

Clarke’s contract with New Zealand Rugby is yet to be extended, leaving the winger to consider his career options following the 2023 RWC, of which he intends to be a part of.

“That’s definitely one thing I'd love to do,” Clarke told AAP.

“I’m a big Rabbitohs supporter and I talk to the Rabbitohs boys every now and then.

“So yeah I’d love to, and I don’t know when, but it’ll definitely be something that I want to tick off as a life goal.”

While discussing previous players who have expressed interest in transferring to league, former Blackcap Mitch McClenaghan believes that Clarke’s intentions are legitimate, and are not just a ploy to force NZR’s hand in the midst of contract deals.

“When (TJ) Perenara did it I thought, 'yeah that’s a contract ploy'. Jordie Barrett, initially when he did it, I thought, 'that’s a contract ploy'. Caleb Clarke... not so much,” McClenaghan said on SENZ The Run Home.

“I mean, he gave up 15’s to go and play at the Olympics... stuff that he wants to tick off in his life.

“Caleb Clarke seems to me that he might be a little bit more of the Sonny Bill (Williams) mould, where he wants to just tick things off in his own life.

“I’m speculating, but I think he could be that kind of person. I think he’s a fantastic footballer... how good would he be at centre?”

The winger is currently awaiting his return to the Blues after receiving a three-week suspension for a reckless aerial challenge against Moana Pasifika in Round 7.
