Ex-Saint opens up on injury that ruined his AFL career

Former St Kilda forward Fergus Watts has opened up on the injury that cut short his AFL career.

Watts broke his leg playing in the VFL for Casey Scorpions, a week after debuting for the Saints in Round 1 of 2006 against West Coast.

“I was playing alright. I remember kicking five in the practice game against Sydney the week before that game at Subi,” he told SEN’s This Is Your Journey – thanks to Tobin Brothers

“I was in good nick, I was feeling good, I was playing well and then played that game at Subi and didn’t blow the lights out but felt like I was finding my feet.

“Got dropped and the reason at that point was match-ups … and then was playing out at Port Melbourne in the VFL that week, I’d kicked two or three or four (goals) in the first half, was feeling great, and then twisted and broke my leg.

“That was basically it.”

Watts was delisted by the Saints at the end of 2007 and required around 12 ankle operations in the 18 months that followed.

He was initially drafted to Adelaide with pick No.14 in the 2003 National Draft before requesting a trade to St Kilda at the end of 2005.
