“Greatest effort player the game has ever seen”: Cornes top seven maximum effort players in the AFL

2022-04-25T08:58+10:00

Kane Cornes has labelled Geelong captain Joel Selwood the “greatest effort player the game has ever seen” and named who he believes are the top seven players in the competition who consistently try the hardest.

Selwood’s refusal to take a backward step despite his side’s comfortable win over North Melbourne caught Cornes’ eye, leading to the lavish praise.

“I was watching Joel Selwood play yesterday and his team is easily beating North Melbourne, like there is no danger of his team losing and every time I look up Joel Selwood’s got his head over the football,” Cornes told SEN Breakfast.

“He’s done that for over 300 games he’s a freak. He had another 24 disposals yesterday with eight tackles.

“He’s the greatest effort player the game has ever seen. I can’t think of a player who has tried more in the history of the game.”

Cornes also praised the Adelaide Crows, who took down the Western Bulldogs in Ballarat on the weekend.

“Adelaide’s the same. Line them up talent for talent with the Western Bulldogs and there is no way they beat the Bulldogs,” the Power great added.

“The reason they win is because they try. They had an absolute crack.”

Kane Cornes’ top seven effort players in the competition below

7. Max Gawn (Melbourne)

“Watched him last night diving over boots, getting back in the hole, taking contested marks, he’s turned himself obviously into a star player, but the inspiration he provides and the effort for his team…”

6. Jacob Weitering (Carlton)

“I wanted to give the key position players some love. Jacob Weitering is a great trier.”

“One-on-one, never gets beaten.

“He’s running back, he’s out of position, gets a hand in, gets a glove in and brings the ball to ground.”

5. Brayden Maynard (Collingwood)

“Just a good trier.”

4. Toby Greene (GWS Giants)

“Just watch him. Watch the effort that he provides. Tagged every week, players hanging off him … he falls to the ground, gets back up.”

3. Ben Keays (Adelaide)

“He just gives incredible effort each and every week.”

2. Touk Miller (Gold Coast)

1. Joel Selwood (Geelong)
