“The bump is essentially gone” after Blue’s “strange” ban

2022-05-02T09:26+10:00

Carlton defender Lewis Young was offered a one-match ban for making front-on contact in Saturday night’s win over North Melbourne.

The MRO graded Young’s bump on Kangaroos forward Cameron Zurhaar as careless and high impact with contact to the body.

Zurhaar briefly came from the ground after colliding with Young, but was able to play out the remainder of the match.

Melbourne great Garry Lyon fears the bump could be dead after Young’s suspension.

“The bump is essentially gone,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“I’m a subscriber to say that the bump’s not (gone), but if we’re penalising blokes for bumping too hard … strange.”

Former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has urged the Blues to appeal Young’s ban.

“I hope Carlton challenge the Young one in particular,” Buckley said.

“I hope they challenge the Young one because I don’t know how you can say that that contact was high.

“It hit him, and it was a solid bump, and I don’t know what his (Young’s) other options were other than not contest – and not contesting is not an option.”

Fellow Blues defender Liam Stocker was also offered a one-match ban after being charged with rough conduct during a contest in the third quarter against the Roos.

Carlton will challenge Young’s one-match ban at the AFL Tribunal.
