NRL and NSW Government “shake hands” to keep Grand Final in Sydney

2022-05-05T08:17+10:00

The NRL Grand Final is reportedly set to stay put after ARLC Chairman Peter V’Landys and NSW Premier Dominic Perrotet came to an agreement to keep the decider in Sydney.

The report comes after the league threatened to take the big game to the highest bidder if stadiums in Sydney weren’t upgraded, with Brisbane offering $10 million to host the game several times across the next decade.

Thankfully for Sydneysiders, the The Daily Telegraph’s Michael Carayannis says that the game will remain at Olympic Park after the NSW Government agreed to spending $800 million on renovating four suburban grounds

“The inevitable is going to happen,” Carayannis said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

The Telegraph are reporting that the $800 million deal is done.

“Following the meeting between Dominic Perrotet and Peter V’Landys last week, they shook hands and agreed that the government would upgrade at least four stadiums in Sydney.”

Carayannis expects Manly’s Brookvale Oval, the Wests Tigers’ Leichhardt Oval and Cronulla’s Shark Park to receive upgrades as part of the agreement.

“The scramble will be on to work out which stadiums they are – I’m not sure if that includes Penrith which has already been slated for an upgrade,” he said.

“I think you’ll find Brookvale, Leichhardt and Shark Park will probably be the ones that get some work done.

“That’ll keep the Grand Final in Sydney … that’s the likely outcome that we all anticipated.”

The 2022 NRL Grand Final will be played on Sunday October 2 at Accor Stadium in Sydney.
