“It’s all coming together”: King's praise for one of his premiership “smokies”

2022-05-06T14:05+10:00

David King likes what he’s seeing from St Kilda this year – labelling them one of his premiership “smokies”.

After a worrying Round 1 loss to Collingwood, the Saints have gone from strength to strength to be one of the most dynamic teams in the competition.

Currently occupying fourth position on the ladder, King has highlighted some key areas of St Kilda’s game that has him convinced that they’re a legitimate contender in 2022.

“Saints have won 13 of the last 16 quarters of football, number one in the competition,” King said on SEN Breakfast.

“I like to track what you’re doing with the footy and without the footy – ball movement stuff is big.

“They’re a great clearance team and they’re a very good contest team around the ground. It’s all coming together for St Kilda.

“They’re brilliant without the football, their defensive stuff is great.

“I really think they’re one of the smokies in this competition right now – if they can stay healthy and continue down this path.”

St Kilda’s clash against reigning premiers Melbourne on Mother’s Day Sunday should also reveal plenty as the Saints look to bounce back from shock loss to Port Adelaide.

St Kilda has won one premiership in their 149-year existence.
