“You’ve just got the PG version”: Bogut says Cambage incident was worse than revealed

2022-05-09T14:48+10:00

Australian basketball great Andrew Bogut says the public only has a “PG version” of what former Opal Liz Cambage said in the now infamous pre-Olympic scrimmage against Nigeria.

The incident in question occurred in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics, with Cambage handed a formal reprimand by Basketball Australia as a result of the verbal stoush.

With those events preceding Cambage’s withdrawal from the Olympic campaign, the incident may have ultimately derailed Australia’s Tokyo medal hopes without their star centre on board.

While what was said originally remained a mystery, former Opals captain Jenna O’Hea recently confirmed to ABC’s Offsiders that the centre told her Nigerian counterparts to “go back to your third world country”.

Those comments caused headlines on Sunday and Bogut believes it could’ve been far worse for the Los Angeles Sparks star if the entire truth of the incident was revealed.

“You’ve just got the PG version, there was much more than that - I’m just glad someone’s come out and said it,” Bogut told 2GB radio.

“It was beyond despicable. There’s much more in there that you can’t say on radio.

“There’s some other words that you can never repeat, that I’d never even say, to be honest with you.”

In response to the revelation, Cambage took to twitter where she claimed ‘the truth will always come to light'.

The recent reports haven’t halted the centre on the court, with Cambage notching 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Sparks in their WNBA clash against the Indiana Fever on Monday afternoon (AEST).
