“A lot’s going to happen”: How loyalties will be tested as coaching race heats up

2022-05-14T18:02+10:00

Four-time premiership Hawk Luke Hodge is intrigued by the posturing and manoeuvring that he predicts will follow Leon Cameron's departure from GWS.

Speaking on SEN's Crunch Time Hodge said he thinks a coaching merry-go-round will occur this year in the wake of Cameron’s resignation, similarly to the circumstances around Nathan Buckley in 2021.

“My interest now is what’s going to happen?’,” he said.

“(Alastair Clarkson’s) sitting there available, what are other clubs going to do?

“Collingwood last year forced Hawthorn’s hand. As soon as Buckley stood down, they said ‘we’re going after (Sam) Mitchell’.”

The two-time Norm Smith medallist says loyalties will be tested over the remainder of the season as clubs will need to choose whether they value stability over the chance of landing a legend coach.

“The next month to six weeks is going to be so big in the AFL,” he explained.

“Who’s going to be stable and stick with their coach and who’s going to say, ‘hang on, if we don’t part ways are we going to miss out on the best coach of the last 20 years.’

“A lot’s going to happen.”

Leon Cameron will depart the Giants after nine years and 179 games at the club where he took them to a Grand Final appearance in 2019.

Clubs like North Melbourne, Port Adelaide and Gold Coast have been linked to potential coaching moves this season and would be keeping a close eye on Alastair Clarkson’s movements.
