Point Nepean earns Melbourne Cup spot after gutsy win

2022-05-14T16:21+10:00

Point Nepean has taken out the 2800-metre Andrew Ramsden to secure immediate entry into the 2022 Melbourne Cup.

The four-year-old horse jumped at $6 with Sportsbet in a glut of short-priced starters for the 2800 long distance slog.

Denis Pagan’s Turn It Up Tommy kicked out to a lead in the early stages with equal-second favourite Luncies close behind.

As the field reached the final turn, legend jockey Craig Williams took Luncies to the inside, but Point Nepean flashed home and held off the gallant gelding.

The traditional Lloyd Williams silks will make yet another appearance in the Cup this year and the racing icon will be hoping Point Nepean can bring him closer to his eighth Melbourne Cup win.

Sportsbet has Point Nepean at a $34 quote, with Hitotsu ($13) and Incentivise ($13) the current equal favourites.
