GWS caretaker sends coaching SOS to former Essendon teammate

2022-05-16T11:49+10:00

Dean Solomon could return to the coaches box after receiving an SOS from former Essendon teammate and new GWS interim coach Mark McVeigh.

McVeigh will this weekend start a 13-match stint as interim Giants coach following Leon Cameron’s decision to step down nine rounds into his ninth season in charge.

Solomon hasn’t been involved in the AFL since being controversially let go by Gold Coast in 2020 with two years remaining on his contract.

The former Bombers defender was cut as the Suns looked to navigate the financial pressures of COVID-19 and the reduction of the football department soft cap.

Solomon has since started two businesses in Kingscliff on the Tweed Coast, where he manages a wellness centre as part of a determination to develop himself.

But with the Giants conscious of putting the adequate support around McVeigh, he is now weighing up whether to relocate to Sydney to help fill the void left by Cameron.

McVeigh, also, would be comforted by the support of familar Essendon people in Solomon, James Hird and Craig Jennings.

A premiership player at Essendon across a 209-game AFL career, Solomon last week tweeted his support for McVeigh when he was announced as interim coach.

“Can’t wait to see what Mark McVeigh will do with the GWS Giants for the remainder of 2022,” Solomon wrote.

“Is a great human. Players hold him in the highest regards. Will do it his way, all in and the stakes will be high.”

To heighten an already hectic period for McVeigh, his partner Meegan is due to give birth to the couple’s first child in about three weeks’ time.

The Giants’ Round 12 bye is also in three weeks, but if the timing doesn’t work out we could see an interim coach replace an interim coach.
