Voss proud but rules out mid-season selection of state star son

2022-05-16T10:00+10:00

Casey Voss has put himself in front of AFL recruiters ahead of the Mid-Season Draft.

Voss won the Fos Williams Medal after racking up 29 disposals and taking 15 marks as South Australia defeated Western Australia by four points at Optus Stadium on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Sturt half-back, who won his SANFL club’s best and fairest last season, has been overlooked in recent National and Rookie Drafts, but must now be in contention for a mid-season spot.

With father Michael coaching Carlton, is there any chance the Blues will call out the name ‘C.Voss’ next month?

The Blues currently have one spot open on their list to fill, but are believed to be more interested in a key position player.

“I’d love to, I’d absolutely love to,” Voss Snr said on SEN Breakfast.

“Unfortunately that won’t be us. There’s a little bit too much difficulty so we might leave that one alone.

“But I really hope he gets his chance. He certainly deserves it, he couldn’t state a stronger case over the last two years, that’s for sure.”

Voss was coaching the Blues in a 30-point win over GWS when his son was strutting his stuff in Perth

Despite ruling his club out of a romantic and significant moment in early June, he says there is immense pride in witnessing Casey’s continued success.

“I haven’t seen it (the game) yet, but it was a well and truly welcome text from my wife after the game,” he said.

“I saw he had the medal around his neck and I was trying to put two and two together pretty fast.

“No matter what you do in football personally, you’re always more proud when your kids do something. It’s pretty special.

“He’s certainly had a great couple of years and a fantastic game.”

Although a Voss reunion at Ikon Park is highly unlikely, the form of the youngster has been good enough to warrant an opportunity at the elite level in the eyes of his old man.

“I believe so (he has nominated). I’m not too sure whether that will be viable for him or not,” Voss said further.

“I guess clubs will work that out if he has some relevance to them.

“He’s certainly well and truly happy with how he’s going in terms of where he’s at with Sturt. He loves the Double Blues and he’s settled into work.

“If that comes to fruition I know he’d be a pretty happy young man.”

Best on ground in the state game aside, Voss has been in fine form for Sturt in 2022.

He is averaging 22 disposals, 10 marks, close to five rebounds 50s and four inside 50s across six matches for the top-of-the-table Double Blues.
