Son of Blues coach backed to find AFL home in mid-season draft

2022-05-17T12:56+10:00

SEN SA Breakfast co-host Andrew Hayes has talked up Casey Voss’ hopes of landing on an AFL list in the mid-season draft.

The 21-year-old defender won the Fos Williams Medal for best afield for South Australia in a state game against Western Australia last weekend.

Voss won Sturt’s best and fairest last year and has continued his outstanding form in 2022, averaging 22 disposals and 10 marks in six matches.

Carlton coach Michael Voss ruled out selecting his son in this year’s mid-season draft, but believes he “certainly deserves” a chance at AFL level.

Hayes says Voss would be a shrewd addition for any AFL club willing to give him an opportunity.

“Absolutely. It was so unbelievably surprising that he didn’t get much interest last year. He was a best and fairest winner, P.T. Morton Medal, at Sturt,” Hayes told SEN SA Breakfast.

“He’s had a couple of really, really good years coming out of the Under 18 system and he just seems like he would suit the AFL.

“He reads the play so well. He had 15 marks sweeping across half-back, 29 disposals.

“All of a sudden, Port Adelaide are going to go into the mid-season draft with a pick, Jake Pasini has been placed on the long-term injury list, so there’s a couple of little connections there.

“He has to go (in the mid-season draft) you would think because he’s going to be a nice little addition wherever he goes.

“Sturt probably don’t love that situation, but that’s the beauty of the mid-season draft for some of these youngsters who want a shot.”

Voss has been instrumental in Sturt’s 5-1 start to the SANFL season.

The 2022 mid-season draft is slated for Wednesday June 1.
